Superman Returns

Allow me to say first and foremost that this review will be partially biased and as spoiler-free as I can possibly make it. I suppose that makes this more of an editorial than a review, eh? In any case, I shall start this rather bluntly: the movie will be hit-or-miss with most moviegoers. You will either enjoy it, or you will not.

Long-time fans of the Superman series, specifically those of the comic, will have little trouble getting into the movie. Casual fans and general non-fans may be completely lost. The movie starts by throwing the viewer directly into the story. Superman has been gone for five years. Clark Kent conveniently went on his "vacation" simultaneously. It is almost as though the world's favorite man in blue tights has been forgotten -- certainly the abrupt and unexpected start for any viewer who has not kept up with the storyline as of late. For a film costing little more than $291 million, you would think the director could have spent a little more time setting up the premise of the movie.

Despite the rough beginning, the movie picks up as it progresses. Those who entered confused may still leave confused, but not without having witnessed a masterfully directed film. There is little I can say about the story itself without spoiling some of the most treasured parts; the clips in the trailers do not do their respective scenes justice. Whether you understand what is going on or not, I can assure you that (unless you are some psychopath with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) you will not leave your seat during this film. Even viewers who are clueless about the story will be captured by the action and suspense.

If you want a personal opinion, I loved the film. It was dramatic, bold, and not what I expected at all. At the same time, I have loosely kept up with the comic over the years, so I already had an idea of what was going on when I headed into the movie. If you are a comic buff, I suggest you brush up on your Superman prior to seeing this film. Conversely, a handful of other viewers at the screening were listless; one, even disgusted.

Regardless of personal opinions from either side, the movie itself will likely win multiple awards. The casting was ingenious, the visual effects astounding, and the soundtrack breathtaking. This film is a must-see, and if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth... hey, I'm just a critic.
